Garrycastle secured another brace of points in their ACL Division 2 campaign with a substantial victory over St. Mary’s from Rochfortbridge at home on Friday evening last. St. Mary’s were first off the mark with a point from play and dictated the terms of the game for the first 10 minutes until Garrycastle broke through to score their first goal when midfielder Jonny Mc Guire found the net. Paul Mulvihill followed up with a point , Conor Cosgrove got on the end of a Jonny McGuire pass and fisted over when it seemed a goal was on the cards. The visitors then fought back with first a point and then they raised the green flag to level matters at the half stage of the first half. The home team kept battling and another Paul Mulvihill point was followed by a goal from other midfielder Noel Galvin who collected a pass after fine fielding by Alan Daly to clinically finish leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. Alan Daly continued to contribute up to the break when first he took a fine point and then set up Peader Mulvihill to complete Garrycastle’s first half tally. St. Mary’s got the last score of the half to leave the home team deservedly leading by 2-6 to 1-4.

The Alan Daly show continued in the early stages of the second half when he was first off the mark with a point and then scored two goals in the space of a minute. The first surprised everyone when he returned a poor kick out from the visitors to float the ball over the keeper and find the net. The second goal put the home team in a very secure position to lead by 4-7 to 1-5 after 35 minutes. Garrycastle then played out the rest of the game by a series of well taken points from Paul Mulvihill, Peader Mulvihill, Conor Cosgrove and sub Robbie Shine who contributed three points in the second half. St. Mary’s second half contribution was six points in total compared to 2-7 for the home team.

This was a fine display by Garrycastle who put up a large score, to the best of the reporter’s recollection, all scores coming from play. The team was most effective when they attacked in numbers down the middle. The defence was well marshalled by Tom McHugh. Midfield were effective at various times and contributed 2 goals. Upfront the full forward line worked well with Peader Mulvihill the best of the half forwards on the day.

Subs: R. Shine for D. Rushe, N. Rattigan for J. McGuire, Enda Keena for M. Monaghan, D O’Shaughnessy for S O’Donoghue, S. Carey for P. Cosgrove, P. Gunning for A. Daly.
