Garrycastle under 16s travelled to Tyrrellspass last Monday evening to take on the home side in round 5 of the league. Following the recent rains the pitch was heavy and soft underfoot.

Garrycastle started well playing into a strong breeze and mounted a number of promising attacks in the opening minutes; however, they failed to score during that period. The home side got off the mark soon after and built up a 5 point lead by the 7th minute. A goal soon followed to put Tyrrellspass firmly in control. Further points pushed them into an eleven point lead before Garrycastle got off the mark with a point from Ross Mulvihill. A second Garrycastle point, this time from Cathal Mannion, reduced the margin. A second Tyrrellspass goal in the 21st minute was followed by Garrycastle best spell of the half from there to the break. A pointed free by Conor Mulvihill was added to by a free from Cathal Mannion to leave the score at 2-9 to 0-4 at the break.

The home side emphasised their advantage in the opening exchanges of the second half and had two goals and several points registered by the mid point. Ross Mulvihill pointed in the 41st minute for Garrycastle and this was quickly followed by a goal for Garrycastle when Cathal Mannion’s long range free deceived the Tyrrellspass goalkeeper and ended up in the net. From there to the end the sides exchanged points, wit the Garrycastle scores coming from Ross Mulvihill and a pointed free from Cathal Mannion.

Garrycastle were disappointing on the night and had to concede that the home side were superior, particularly in the opening half. To their credit the Garrycastle lads never gave up trying and played their best football in the closing minutes of both halfs. Paul McKiernan was assured in goal and brought off some fine saves. There were notable performances also from Sean Mulvihill, Cathal Mannion and Ross Mulvihill.

Round 6 of the league will see Garrycastle entertain Inny Shamrocks on Monday 20th May in Garrycastle at 7pm.
