CORALSTOWN/KINNEGAD 3-12  GARRYCASTLE 2-12

Garrycastle suffered their second defeat in the group stage in Moate last Sunday evening when they went down to Coralstown/Kinnegad. Despite this defeat Garrycastle will be in the quarter-finals next Sunday against Athlone as runners-up in Section B by virtue of the fact that they beat both Tyrrellspass and Castledaly in the group stage.

Coralstown/Kinnegad got off to a flyer with a point from a free within 30 seconds. However, Garrycastle responded with three points Dessie Dolan, Eoin Monaghan and a second point from a free by Dessie Dolan.  A point from play by Coralstown/Kinnegad was added to by one from a free to level matters by the 9th minute. A point from Dessie Dolan pushed his side ahead again only for this to be wiped out when a long delivery into the Garrycastle goalmouth was deflected into his own net by John Gaffey for the game’s first goal. It didn’t take long for Garrycastle to respond and a good build up resulted in a goal from Justin Barrett to put Garrycastle in front again. Two points in quick succession from Coralstown/Kinnegad had the side level again by the 16th minute. A pointed free from Dessie was added to by the same player from open play. Coralstown/Kinnegad replied with three points of their own and then followed this up with a second goal. Cathal Mullin had gathered possession but his attempted clearance hit a Coralstown/Kinnegad player and flew into the Garrycastle net. A pointed free from Dessie Dolan reduce the gap at the break to four points on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-7.

Garrycastle needed to make a good start to the second half and Dessie Dolan pointed a free in the first minute. After a sustained period of pressure James Duignan pointed to reduce the margin further. Garrycastle grabbed the lead with a coal in the 38tyh minute as substitute Alan Daly gathered a pass from Dessie Dolan and fired to the Coralstown/Kinnegad net. Two pointed free by Coralstown/Kinnegad pushed them ahead again but a decisive third goal came at the mid point of the half from Coralstown/Kinnegad to restore their 4 point cushion. Dessie Dolan pointed again for Garrycastle but a Coralstown/Kinnegad pointed free kept the gap between the sides. A point from Dessie Dolan was cancelled out by one from Coralstown/Kinnegad as we entered the final 5 minutes. A free was dropped into the Coralstown/Kinnegad goal area but a fine save by the Coralstown/Kinnegad net minder prevented a goal opportunity for Garrycastle. James Duignan did have a pointed free for Garrycastle deep into injury time but is was not enough to pull the result out of the fire.

This was a very disappointing and flat performance from Garrycastle and apart from a number of notable exceptions the team had a poor hour. Dessie Dolan as usual had a big say on the scoreboard and was also involved in good build up play. Alan Fox and Tom McHugh were strong in defence. Doron Harte had a strong showing following his introduction. There will have to be a huge improvement next weekend if Garrycastle are to advance to the semi-finals.
