Garrycastle 2-17  St. Loman's 3-5

Garrycastle had a comprehensive win over St. Loman's, Mullingar in Lakepoint Park on Friday, September 13th to become the first Garrycastle Minor team since 2006 to book themselves a place in the Minor Division 2 Final. Kenny Dolan was first off the mark with a converted free which was followed by two more Garrycastle points to put the Green and Red 3 points to 1 ahead early on.  A further exchange of points was followed by a Loman's goal to put them ahead for the first and as it turned out last time in the match. Garrycastle responded well with a fine Michael Monaghan point from play. Garrycastle then took complete control of the game and played very effective and exciting football with a succession of scores from play with contributions from Eric Kearney, Michael Monaghan, Cathal Mannion Terry Rushe, Kenny Dolan who raised the green flag and Emmet Brennan to put the visiting team in a commanding 1-10 to 1-3 lead at half time.

Loman's were first to score in the second half with a free but Conor Duignan quickly restored Garrycastle's 7 point lead. Evan Dalton then added his name to the Garrycastle score sheet with a point after two attempts in succession. Garrycastle then got their 2nd goal from a speculative shot from distance by Eric Kearney which deceived the goalkeeper and curled into the top corner of the goal. Cathal Mannion converted a free to bring the score to 2-14 to 1-5. St. Loman's then got a lucky break with a "soft" goal that  deceived the Garrycastle defence. This gave the home team something to play for and they were further boosted by a third goal shortly afterwards. At this point Garrycastle were struggling but Cathal Mannion steadied the ship with a fine point from play. This was added to by Michael Monaghan and Kenny Dolan who converted a free for the last score of the game.

This was an excellent team performance reflected by the fact that every forward and midfield player scored on the night. The defence also worked hard in keeping the opposition in check with the obvious exception of the goals. Every player from Mark Curley taking the goal keeping duty on the night to the substitutes made telling contributions and kept their heads when faced with occasional strong pressure. The team can be justly proud of their achievement and should be confident facing into the final.
