Ballynacargy  3-16 Garrycastle 3-10

Garrycastle Minors opened their Championship campaign away to Ballynacargy on Monday, July 16th going down valiantly by 6 points against the Division 1 side. The opening minutes saw both sides competing well with the sides level at 2 points a-piece after 5 minutes. During this period Eoin Slevin got down well to make a fine save from a clear goal chance. Ballynacargy then took over and hit 3 more points before Michael Monaghan (2) and Evan Dalton levelled the score. There was a further exchange of points but then Ballynacargy upped the ante and hit 4 more points without reply to leave the half-time score at 0-10 to 0-6 for the home team team.

Garrycastle really needed a score at the start of the 2nd half to get back into the game but unfortunately it was the home side who got the dream start with a goal within 2 minutes of the restart. Garrycastle did respond with a goal from Emmet Brennan  but were further rocked by another Ballynacargy goal followed by two further points to put 8 points between the teams. There was a further exchange of points before Ballynacargy rocked the Castle again with a third goal. Now trailing by 11 points Garrycastle really needed to respond and they did when Darragh Brody finished to the net after a fine move. Still trailing Garrycastle rallied and after some further exchange of points were awarded a close in free. Michael Monaghan stepped up and blasted the ball to the net. Garrycastle finished the scoring with a further point before the Referee blew the final whistle.

Overall it was a spirited display by Garrycastle with all but two scores coming from play. With some regulars unavailable, full credit to the 19 players who turned out and gave a good account of themselves. Some improvement is needed in terms of options taken at key times in both defence and attack but if the work rate and spirit is maintained this team could have some success in the championship. We wish Jack Mc Gann and Cian Hayden speedy recoveries from the injuries sustained in the game.
