Garrycastle’s Junior A side got their championship campaign off to a winning start in sunny Kinnegad last Friday evening with a well merit win over the home team.

Garrycastle made a positive start to proceedings and registered their first point in the 3rd minute from Alan Daly. Colman Gantley added to their tally soon after with a well taken point. The home side got off the mark with a point from a close range free in the 6th minute. Garrycastle were enjoying good possession and were playing quick ball into the inside line, where Alan Daly in particular was giving the home defence a hard time. He got his second point of the game to stretch his side’s lead and then added a goal in the 13th minute after good approach play and a good pass from Paul Mulvihill. Sean Brennan broke forward from midfield to pop over a point to leave Garrycastle in a strong position with only 13 minutes elapsed. Coralstown/Kinnegad responded with a point from a free but were dealt a significant blow in the 21st minute when Alan Daly and Paul Mulvihill combined to put Paul in the clear and he finished emphatically to the net for his side’s second goal of the game. Another point from Alan Daly, following a surging solo run through the middle from Gary Mullery, emphasised their superiority at this stage. However, the home side finished the half well and added two points, both from frees, to leave the score 2-5 to 0-4 in Garrycastle’s favour on Michael Gordon’s half time whistle.

Coralstown/Kinnegad pressed forward on the restart and were rewarded with their first point from play after just a minute. Sean Brennan responded with a point for Garrycastle immediately. Garrycastle continued to have most of the possession and points from Michael Monaghan and Sean Brennan were added to by one from a placed ball by Noel Galvin to leave Garrycastle ahead by 2-9 to 0-5 by the mid point of the half. Further points from Paul Mulvihill and Alan Daly stretched the lead even further. Coralstown/Kinnegad responded with a point from play but the game was truly ended as a contest in the 52nd minute when Anthony Larkin found the net for Garrycastle’s third goal. Alan Daly added a point. From there to the end the home side rallied and tacked on a point from play and two points from frees. The final score was 3-12 to 0-9.

This was a good performance from Garrycastle and suggests that Aidan Dunning’s charges can challenge for honours if they consistently play to this standard. There were good performances from Conor Harrington, Gary Mullery, Johnny McGuire, Sean Brennan and Noel Galvin. Alan Daly showed that he can still be a handful for any defence and was my Man of the Match.
