GARRYCASTLE 3-13                        MOATE ALL WHITES 0-17

Garrycastle did just about enough to win this entertaining Junior B championship encounter in Garrycastle last Sunday morning.

The opening exchanges saw Garrycastle lead with a point from Michael Monaghan inside the first couple of minutes but Moate hit back with points to lead by two after 10 minutes of play. Paul Donovan hit over a point for Garrycastle and the same player levelled matters in the 16th minute. Moate regained the lead with a good point but a free was pointed by Robbie Shine to restore parity almost immediately. Moate lead yet again but Conor Molloy pointed in response. Goals win games and the first of the Garrycastle green flags came in the 23rd minute as Paul Donovan was upended in the large square and Robbie Shine converted the resultant penalty in some style. Team captain, Peadar Mulvihill, broke forward in support and hit over a fine point to stretch Garrycastle’s lead further. Robbie Shine had a point from play only for Moate to hit back with a point also from open play. Right on half time Neil Rattigan broke forward from midfield and his shot from distance beat the Moate goalkeeper for their second goal of the half. The score at the break was 2-7 to 0-6 in Garrycastle’s favour.

Moate made a bright start to the second half and had a point inside 30 seconds. Robbie Shine hit over a point from a free but Moate responded immediately with another point, which they added to in quick fashion. Paul Gunning then won possession after good approach play to fire over a point for Garrycastle. Moate had another point and the sides exchanged points yet again, the Garrycastle effort coming from Paul Donovan who struck his shot on the volley from an almost impossible angle. It was nip and tuck as the teams attacked and Moate had a number of points, with a reply coming for Garrycastle from Conor Molloy. A second Garrycastle penalty was awarded by Referee, Declan Nugent, when Mark Curley was fouled in the large rectangle and Robbie Shine stepped up to convert yet again in the 46th minute. Moate hit over two points but Robbie Shine responded with a point for the home side. A point for Moate reduced the gap but Paul Gunning had a point to stretch the lead to 6 points with just under 10 minutes remaining. Moate pressed forward looking for scores to bridge the gap, but a combination of stout defending and some poor shooting saw them fail to make any significant headway. The final score was a pointed free by the visitors to leave it 3-13 to 0-17 ay the end.

This was a merited win for Garrycastle. With just 15 players it was difficult towards the latter part of the game and the humid and hot conditions took its toll on players and with no substitutes available there was no opportunity to bring on fresh legs.

There were particularly good performances in defence by Stephen McGuire, Anthony Larkin and Tom McHugh. Neil Rattigan and Conor Molloy worked tirelessly in midfield. Mark Curley, Robbie Shine, Paul Gunning and Paul Donovan caught the eye in attack.

GARRYCASTLE: Padraig Cosgrove, Stephen McGuire, Anthony Larkin, Peadar Mulvihill (01), Frank Doolan, Tom McHugh, Enda Keena, Neil Rattigan (1-0), Conor Molloy (0-2), Mark Curley, Robbie Shine (2-4, 2-2f), Michael Monaghan (0-1), Paul Donovan (0-3), Noel Galvin and Paul Gunning (0-2).
