Garrycastle got their division 1 campaign off to a winning start in Michael McDermott’s first competitive game in charge. This re-arranged game, which also doubled up as the first round of the Feis Cup, was played in ideal, if somewhat cold, conditions in Garrycastle last Sunday morning and it was clear from the number of kicking and handling errors from both sides that the players needed the game to bring them on.

Tubberclair had the first score, a pointed free, in the very first minute. Garrycastle responded with a point from Johnny McGuire but two further pointed frees pushed Tubberclair into a two point lead by the 13th minute. A pointed free by James Dolan was soon followed up with a point from Neil Rattigan to level the score by the 17th minute. From there to the half time break it was all Garrycastle. A goal from James Dolan was quickly followed by two points from Patrick Mulvihill. The same player had the last score of the half, a pointed free, to leave the home side ahead by 1-6 to 0-3 when Declan Nugent sounded his whistle for half time.

The second half started at a slow pace and it was not until the 8th minute of the half that we got a score, a point from Eoin Monaghan. A second Garrycastle goal in the 46th minute from Peadar Mulvihill, who had only just come on as a substitute, all but ended the game as a contest. James Dolan added a point to increase the Garrycastle lead. Tubberclair got their first score from play with a well taken point in the 51st minute. The sides exchanged points, with the Garrycastle score coming from Gary McCallon on a rare foray up-field and Tubberclair’s came via a placed ball. Further points from Gary Dolan and Enda Mulvihill increased the Garrycastle margin but Tubberclair had the last score in added time with a point from play. The final score 2-11 to 0-6 in Garrycastle’s favour.

Given that this was their first competitive game of the new season, Manager Michael McDermott will be pleased to have secured the win. There were good performances from Enda Mulvihill and Karl Henson in defence. Patrick Mulvihill and Aidan Browne were on top in midfield after the opening period. There were good displays from Johnny McGuire, Neil Rattigan and Peadar Mulvihill in attack.
