ALL COUNTY LEAGUE (Division 7 Final)

Garrycastle Junior B side captured the Division 7 league title with a well merited win over Mullingar Shamrocks in Lakepoint Park last Saturday morning. This gives the club a unique triple crown of league titles in 2012 – Division 1, 3 and 7 annexed in one season.

Played in ideal conditions on St Loman’s 3G pitch the game was tight for the opening 15 minutes. Garrycastle got a point from a close range free, converted by Noel Galvin in the second minute. Mullingar Shamrocks responded with a pointed free. A second pointed free, this time from Alex Gardiner, put Garrycastle ahead again by the 5th minute. A goal from Paul Mulvihill, after very good approach play, increased the Garrycastle lead in the 7th minute. Mullingar Shamrocks responded with a point but Alex Gardiner with another successful free stretched the lead again. A point from Ciaran O’Neill was soon added to by a wonderful goal for Garrycastle. Slick passing and movement opened up the Shamrocks defence and Paul Mulvihill set up Padraig Cosgrove to raise the green flag. With an eight point lead by the 19th minute Garrycastle were in a strong position. Shamrocks had a point, however, Garrycastle kept up the pressure on the Shamrocks defense and a point from Noel Galvin was followed up by a third Garrycastle goal when Paul Mulvihill was on hand to find the net in the 24th minute. The half time score was 3-5 to 0-3 in Garrycastle’s favour.

Shamrocks needed a good start to the second period and they nearly got the break they hoped for in their first attack of the half. A good build up created a chance but strong and resolute defending by Sean Brennan and Eoin Mooney prevented a goal. Padraig Cosgrove had a point for Garrycastle to open their account in the second half but Shamrocks responded with a point of their own immediately. Johnny McGuire pointed and this was added to by Padraig Cosgrove to increase the Garrycastle lead even further. Shamrock had a point in the 44th minute, which was to be their last score. A fourth Garrycastle goal from Paul Mulvihill, ended any hope for Shamrocks. Points from Ciaran O’Neill, Robbie Shine and Alex Gardiner only went to emphasise the Garrycastle superiority on the day. Try as they might Shamrocks could not breach the Garrycastle defense and the final score was 4-11 to 0-5.

This was an excellent team display. Every player played their part and can now look forward to playing in Division 6 in 2013. There were particularly strong displays from Eoin Mooney, Sean Brennan and Peadar Mulvihill in defence. Ciaran O’Neill and Mathew Guiheen gave their side the edge in midfield and ensured a plentiful supply of good ball into the forwards. Alex Gardiner, Paul Mulvihill and Noel Galvin were particularly prominent in attack. Each of the substitutes played their part in a wonderful win for the club.
