Garrycastle Junior B side travelled to Kinnegad on Friday evening to take on the home side in a winner takes all tie, with high hopes of securing back to back league promotions. However, it was the home side that had the first score, a point from a free in the 12th minute. Garrycastle had lots of good possession but failed to turn opportunities into scores. Perhaps it was the more than 3 month gap since their last outing but they seemed to lack cohesion in their play. The home side doubled their lead in the 16thminute and we had to wait until the 21st minute for the first Garrycastle score, a point from play by Peadar Mulvihill. The sides were level in the 25th minute when substitute, Paul Gunning, pointed for Garrycastle. However the home side went ahead again in first half added time to lead by the narrowest of margins at the break on a score line of 0-3 to 0-2.

Garrycastle made a better start to the second period and pointed through Damian Rushe in the 34th minute. The play ebbed from one end to the other. Coralstown/Kinnegad had a point from a free and in their next attack got a vital goal to take a decisive lead. Garrycastle responded to this setback with a pointed free by Paul Gunning. The game was very open at this stage and the sides traded points, with Garrycastle efforts from Emmet Keena, Sean Brennan, Damian Rushe and Johnny McGuire, who had been reintroduced in place of Paul Donovan, in response to three points from play for the home side. Paul Mulvihill pointed for Garrycastle but the home side responded with a point of their own. Coralstown/Kinnegad added a point in injury time. Garrycastle pressed forward looking for an equaliser and Tom McHugh flashed a close range free just over the bar in added time. However, it was to be the last play and the home side were victorious and secured promotion to division 5 in 2014.

It was a disappointing result for Garrycastle but every player present tried their best to secure the league title. It was very disappointing that so many eligible players were unavailable on the night, leaving just one substitute available. A number of fresh legs in the closing stages may have made a big difference to the result. Our congratulations to Coralstown/Kinnegad and best wishes for their campaign in division 5 next year.

Best on the night for Garrycastle were Gary Mullery, Tom McHugh, Sean Carey Peadar Mulvihill, Damian Rushe and Paul Gunning.
