KILLUCAN 1-11        GARRYCASTLE 0 -12

An under strength Garrycastle Junior team just failed to secure any points in this re-arranged Division clash in Garrycastle last Saturday evening.

The visitors had the first score in the very first minute when they worked a good attack to score a point. It took Garrycastle some time to settle but they levelled matter in the 4th minute when Johnny McGuire broke forward from mid field and pointed. In their next attack the home side took the lead as Alan Daly pointed a free. A fine point from distance by Justin McAteer extended Garrycastle’s lead as the mid point of the half neared. Killucan were guilty of a couple of poor wides from scoring positions, but had a point in the 17ty minute to narrow the margin to just a point. A point from Justin McAteer was quickly followed by a point from Noel Galvin to increase their lead to 3 points. Killucan had their best period of the half as they created a couple of goal opportunities. However, some good defending by Shane O’Connell and his full back line ensured the green flag was not raised. Killucan did register two points in the closing minutes to leave it 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.

Noel Galvin got the home side off to the perfect restart when he pointed but Killucan hit back with a point from a close range free. Garrycastle mid fielder, Johnny McGuire, picked up a yellow card but in his next play pointed for Garrycastle. Killucan had another good spell and rattled off 3 points in a 4 minute period to jump into the lead. Garrycastle’s cause was dealt a further setback when Johnny McGuire received a second yellow card in the 41st minute. Killucan had another point soon after to stretch their lead to 2 points. A pointed free by Noel Galvin was followed up wit one from play by Ciaran O’Neill to level the scores mid way through the second period. Killucan regained the lead only for Peadar Mulvihill to tie it up again with 10 minutes remaining. In such a tight game a goal was always going to be telling, and the visitors got through for the score when Garrycastle lost possession in their own half back line in the 54th minute and Killucan worked the space to register the goal. Garrycastle never gave up and hit back with two pointed frees, both from the boot of Noel Galvin to leave just a point in it with a minute of normal time remaining. The visitors were reduced to 14 when a second yellow was given to one of their mid filed players. However, try as the might Garrycastle could not engineer an equaliser. In fact Killucan broke forward to grab a point as the game entered injury time. The final score 1-11 to 0-12 in Killucan’s favour.

Garrycastle will be disappointed not to have secured at least a point from this encounter, however, given the number of players unavailable it was a spirited performance. There were good performances from Justin Barrett, Ciaran O’Neill and Gary McCallon in defence. After a strong first half our mid field faded in the second period. Noel Galvin, Alan Daly and Michael Monaghan were most prominent in attack.

GARRYCASTLE: Shane O’Connell, Gary Mullery, Justin Barrett, Colman Gantley, Ciaran O’Neill (0-1), Gary McCallon, Peadar Mulvihill (0-1), Justin McAteer (0-2), Johnny McGuire (0-2), Neill Rattigan, Noel Galvin (0-5, 2f ), Brian Carty, Michael Monaghan, Alan Daly (0-1, 1f) and Paul Mulvihill.

SUB: Enda Keena for Paul Mulvihill (55 min).
