Coralstown-Kinnegad 4-8            Garrycastle 1-7

Garrycastle had their first outing of the year on Sunday last in Kinnegad and came away empty-handed against a strong home team. Kinnegad is one of four senior clubs in this very competitive division and are intent on regaining their place in the top division. They were sharper all over the field and even when playing against the wind in the first half they created the better openings. They notched an early goal and followed with a second five minutes later. Garrycastle have been training hard indoors and on artificial surfaces over the past few weeks but this was their first action on grass and it took them a long time to settle. They were lucky to trail by just a point – 2-2 to 1-4 – at half time but in fairness they improved as the second half wore on. By that stage, however, the home team had scored another 1-4 to effectively secure the points. The introduction of a few substitutions injected more urgency in Garrycastle’s play and they added three points, but another Kinnegad goal cancelled these out.

Garrycastle’s best players were John O’Shaughnessy and Eoin Monaghan, while several others improved after a bad start. There are several tough games ahead in this division and lots of opportunities for players to stake claims for starting places.
