GARRYCASTLE 1-11            ATHLONE 1-7

Garrycastle seniors picked up a valuable but hard fought win over neighbours Athlone in Garrycastle on Tuesday evening.

Athlone made a bright start and had a couple of points on the board in the opening minutes thanks to a score from play and one from a free. Dessie Dolan got Garrycastle off the mark with a pointed free in the 8th minute. Athlone tacked on a point from play, which was sandwiched between two great goal opportunities for the visitors. On both occasions Cathal Mullin came to his side’s rescue with important saves. Athlone continued to enjoy good periods of possession and created opportunities. In this period they added a point from play and then goaled from a penalty in the 23rd minute. Patrick Mulvihill then brought a good save from the Athlone net-minder as the half time break approached. A point from Gary McCallon in the second minute of added time brought the half to a close on a score-line of 1-5 to 0-3 in Athlone’s favour.

Justin Barrett was introduced at half time for Neil Rattigan. However, it was Athlone who again started the brighter in the second half and added two points in the opening minutes from a 45 and one from open play. Incredibly this proved to be Athlone’s last score as Garrycastle began to dominate possession in the second half. Dessie Dolan added a point from a free and this was quickly added to by a goal from Eoin Monaghan who finished with aplomb from close range in the 35th minute. Dessie Dolan pointed from a 45 in the 38th minute. The home side created a number of good opportunities in the following period but failed to add to their tally. Matthew Guiheen then broke forward to fire over a point in the 41st minute and the same player added another point almost immediately to level matters at 1-7 each. A point from Patrick Mulvihill was then added to by one from Eoin Monaghan. Dessie Dolan converted another 45 and in the final minutes Eoin Monaghan added a point from close range to leave it 1-11 to 1-7 at the end.

Athlone put up a spirited effort, particularly in the first half and were unlucky to have only a five point lead at the break. However, Garrycastle upped the pace in the second period and were worthy winners in the end. There were good performances from Cathal Mullin in goal, Gary Mullery, John Gaffey and Gary McCallon in defence. Justin Barrett contributed well following his introduction. Eoin Monaghan, Patrick Mulvihill and Dessie Dolan caught the eye in attack in the second period.
