Garrycastle 2-6 Maryland 1-6

Garrycastle seniors made the short trip to Drumraney last Sunday and came away with two more league points after a hard-earned win over the home team. Not surprisingly after all the bad weather, the pitch was very heavy and it wasn't easy to play constructive football. However, both teams coped well with the conditions and played the game in the right spirit. Garrycastle got a great start when Justin Barrett surged forward , played a one-two with Paul Mulvihill, and crashed home a great goal. Sean Brennan followed up with a well-taken point but Maryland got right back into the game when their alert corner forward grabbed a rebound off the post and gave Cathal Mullin no chance from close range. Points from Michael Monaghan (2) and Ciaran O'Neill helped Garrycastle to a half time lead of 1-4 to 1-1, which didn't seem enough with the wind to face in the second half. However, within seconds of the re-start a great run by Gary McCallon put Ciaran O'Neill through and when he was taken down in the square Gary Dolan blasted the penalty to the net. Gary followed up with a splendid point from a 40 metre free but Garrycastle failed to build on this and gradually Maryland began to reduce the margin. With a few minutes left the gap was down to two points until Michael Monaghan scored his third point from play. In the final seconds Sean Brennan burst through for what looked a certain goal up but the Maryland goalie brought off a super save, and the final whistle came just after.

This was an encouraging display by Garrycastle and with a number of regulars unavailable the younger players took the opportunity to impress the team management. With four weeks to the next championship game, attendances at training should be boosted as players compete for starting places.

GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Mullin, Gary Mullery, Enda Mulvihill, Jack Donohue, Tom McHugh, Justin Barrett (1-0), Gary McCallon, Gary Dolan (1-1), Sean Brennan (0-1), Neill Rattigan, Ciaran O'Neill (0-1), Johnny McGuire, Paul Mulvihill, Justin McAteer, Michael Monaghan (0-3).
