MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 0-12  GARRYCASTLE 1-8

Garrycastle relinquished their Westmeath senior title when going down by the narrowest of margins in Sunday’s replay of the 2012 final.

Mullingar Shamrocks made the better start and registered two points within the opening 2 minutes, the opening from play and the second from a free. It was taking Garrycastle some time to settle and Dessie Dolan got them off the mark with a point from a free in the 7th minute. Garrycastle began to dominate possession, with Aidan Browne winning most of the midfield battles, and this provided ample opportunities to deliver good ball to the forwards.  A pointed free from Conor Cosgrove was added to by Dessie Dolan, also from a free. Dessie then added a point from play before Garrycastle grabbed an important goal I mid way into the half. A good attacking move carved open the Mullingar Shamrocks defence and James Dolan was put through on goal and he calmly shot past Ronan Tyrrell to put his side 1-4 to 0-2 ahead. Mullingar Shamrocks responded well to this set back with a point in their next attack.  Garrycastle captain, Patrick Mulvihill, pointed to restore his side’s 5 point advantage. The sides exchanged points, the Garrycastle score coming from Doron Harte. Mullingar Shamrocks had the final score f the half, a point from a close in free to leave it 1-6 to 0-6 in Garrycastle’s favour at the break.

Conor Cosgrove pointed a close range free in the opening period of the second half to push his side further ahead. However, it proved to be a rare score for the defending champions, as Mullingar Shamrocks began to dictate the play.  Points from Sean Daly and substitute, Darragh Ryan, reduced the gap by the 44th minute. A wonderful Garrycastle move saw Matthew Guiheen put clear on goal, however he pulled his shot for goal wide of the left hand post. This was as things transpired an important moment in the game. Mullingar Shamrocks began to chip away at the Garrycastle lead and a pointed free followed by one from play by Killian Daly had the sides level in the 55th minute. Shamrocks hit the front in the first minute of the three minutes of added time announced, from a free which was needlessly conceded by the Garrycastle defence. They took a giant stride to the championship soon after when Sean Daly pointed from play. Garrycastle attacked and a foul on Conor Cosgrove saw Dessie Dolan shoot for goal, but his effort was deflected up and over the bar by the massed Shamrocks defence. There was time for one more play, but Shamrocks gained possession and Damien Maher’s final whistle signalled new county champions in Mullingar Shamrocks.

Congratulations to Mullingar Shamrocks and everyone in Garrycastle hope they can go on and put in a strong push for provincial honours.

Best for Garrycastle were Enda Mulvihill, Karl Henson, Aidan Browne, Matthew Guiheen, Dessie Dolan and James Dolan.
