Garrycastle 2-10 St. Mary’s/Rochfordbridge 0-5

Garrycastle minor team had a hard earned victory over a determined St.Mary’s team in the quarter-final on the Division 2 Minor championship in Rochfordbridge on Saturday last. Garrycastle had to play against the strong breeze in the first half and their defence had to be at their best to cope with the constant pressure that St. Mary’s were putting them under. Garrycastle managed to get on the score board when Frank Farrell popped up from corner back to score a fine point. Further points from Paul Gunning and two from Michael Monaghan left the half-time score Garrycastle 0-4 to St. Mary’s 0-0.

Garrycastle started well early in the second half and added further points from Justin Barrett, Paul Gunning and Michael Monaghan. St. Mary’s scored a few fine points from play to bring them back into contention and only a great reflex save from Michael Fagan at his near post helped to prevent St. Mary’s getting backed into the game. Garrycastle settled back into the game and some great points from Paul Gunning and Michael Monaghan helped extend their lead further.
Garrycastle introduced a number of substitutes late on in the game and a superb goal from Conor McKiernan knocked the heart out of the St. Mary’s team and a further well taken goal from Emmett Brennan made sure Garrycastle were going to be victorious on the day.

The final score was Garrycastle 2-10 St.Mary’s/Rochfordbridge 0-5.

Garrycastle play the winners of Maryland /Tang or Ballinacarrigy in the Division 2 semi-final.
Garrycastle team and mentors can take heart from this performance but they will learn that any lapses in concentration will be punished if they are to go further in the competition.
