BALLYMORE 0-13 GARRYCASTLE 0-10

Garrycastle lost out in this year’s Junior B Championship game against the home side in Ballymore last Sunday afternoon.

It was disappointing that we only had 15 players available, but credit to those who togged out for giving everything to try and advance in the championship.

Paul Gunning got the scoring up and running with a good point for Garrycastle in the 3rd minute. Ballymore hit back with points in quick succession to lead by a point in the 7th minute. Alex Gardiner levelled matters with a pointed free following a foul on Paul Gunning. Two points for the home side pushed them in front again before Paul Mulvihill hit over a good point. Alex Gardiner then levelled matters with a point from play in the 14th minute. The sides exchanged points, with the Garrycastle score coming from an Alex Gardiner free. Ballymore lead again with a point from play before Alex Gardiner showed his prowess from a placed ball to again level the score at 0-5 each. Ballymore finished the half stronger and added two points, the first from a free, before Declan Nugent’s whistle signalled the half time break. The score was 0-8 to 0-6 in Ballymore’s favour.

The home side stretched their lead with a point right on the resumption. Alex Gardiner was again accurate from a free for Garrycastle. Two pointed frees for the home side increased their lead before Alex Gardiner slotted over yet another free for Garrycastle. Ballymore had a pointed free and followed up with one from play to lead by 0-13 to 0-8 with just 10 minutes remaining. Garrycastel rallied strongly. A close range free saw Alex Gardiner go for goal, however his shot was saved but Paul Mulvihill picked up possession and pointed. A couple of scoring opportunities were passed up by Garrycastle before Alex Gardiner pointed yet another free with just two minutes remaining. Sean Carey had an opening but his shot flew wide of the goal. The final score was 0-13 to 0-10 for Ballymore.

It was obvious that this side had not played together for nearly 3 months. The lack of numbers also meant that it was not possible to bring some fresh legs later in the game when players tired on the heavy ground. There were good performances from Michael Fagan in goal, Shane Carr, Noel Galvin and Peadar Mulvihill in defence. Johnny McGuire and Conor Molloy worked had in the centre. The attack was well served by Alex Gardiner, Paul Gunning and Paul Mulvihill.

GARRYCASTLE: Michael Fagan, Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Shane Carr, Sean Carey, Noel Galvin, Peadar Mulvihill, Conor Molloy, Johnny McGuire, Enda Keena, Alex Gardiner (0-7, 0-6f), Emmet Keena, Paul Gunning (0-1), Padraig Cosgrove and Paul Mulvihill (0-2).
