SHANDONAGH 1-13 GARRYCASTLE 2-7 (after extra time)

A brave and committed performance by Garrycastle in Ballymore last Saturday wasn’t enough to retain their Intermediate status. Right from the start Garrycastle took the game to their physically stronger opponents and two well-taken goals by Alex Gardiner (both set up by Padraig Cosgrove) gave them a lead of 2-2 to 0-4 at half time. With the wind in their favour Shandonagh had most of the second half play, aided by the fact that Garrycastle had been reduced to 14 men just before half time. Garrycastle’s defence was resolute and kept their team in front until the last few minutes. Eventually Shandonagh took the lead but a magnificent pointed free from 45 metres by Alex Gardiner brought the game to extra time. The sides were still deadlocked in extra time until Shandonagh scored the winning goal with two minutes left, as darkness descended. Even then Garrycastle didn’t give up and almost got the equaliser in the final seconds.

On an evening when every Garrycastle player was heroic there were particularly outstanding displays from Gary Mullery, Conor Harrington, John Murphy, Donovan Hermbusche, Matthew Guiheen, Noel Galvin and Alex Gardiner.
