Garrycastle 0-10 Tubberclair 1-13

Garrycastle exited the Under-16 division 2 championship at the semi-final stage in Tubberclair on Wednesday evening. On a windy evening, Tubberclair got off to a good start with an early point from a free, before Garrycastle settled down and opened their account with a well taken point from Ken Dolan from play. Within minutes, Garrycastle extended their lead with a point from Cathal Mannion (following a short free from Ken), and went further ahead with another point from Cian Hayden, (following another shot free from Ken). Tubberclair responded with another point from a free, but this was cancelled out almost immediately by a point from the impressive Evan Dalton, following a well worked move from the back line. Again Tubberclair responded and drew level, with a brace of points, one from a close-in free. A move started from Frank Farrell, playing excellently at center half-back, then ended with Ken taking a point. Approaching half time both teams exchanged points, Garrycastles coming from play by Evan, but were also guilty of some poor shooting, with Garrycastle having 3 wides in the last 5 minutes of the half. However, at half-time, things looked promising for Garrycastle, as they led on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-5.

As the second half started, and playing with the wind, Garrycastle would have expected to push on, but it was not to be. Within moments of the resumption, Tubberclair had levelled the scores with a free, before taking the lead with a point from play. Then, with Garrycastle still to find their rhythm in the second half, Tubberclair broke through for a strike on goal, drawing an excellent save from Eoin Slevin, but the Tubberclair forwards were faster to react to the breaking ball and slotted home the rebound. Garrycastle tried to respond, and Evan stroked over a nice point, but Tubberclair were now in charge and tacked on 3 unanswered points, (2 from frees), to leave themselves firmly in the driving seat. Points from Evan (from a free) and Ken narrowed the gap to four points before the turning point of the game from a Garrycastle viewpoint, as Ken got in behind the Tubberclair defence and unleashed a blistering shot for goal, only to see it brilliantly stopped by the Tubberclair goalkeeper. The ball was rapidly moved downfield, and Tubberclair tapped over a point to extend their lead. Tubberclair pushed on now, and added two further points from frees, while Garrycastle could only muster one final score, a pointed free from Ken.

So, just as in 2011, Garrycastle exit the Fé 16 championships at the semi-final stage. Good performances on the night from Frank Farrell and Sean Kilgarriff at the back, Evan Dalton in midfield, and Cathal Mannion in the forwards. Unfortunately, the Garrycastle midfield never really got into this game, and this, coupled with the concession of too many scoreable frees, (8 in total), put the game out of reach.

Team: Eoin Slevin, Eric McCormack, Ben Kennedy, Adam Keena, Sean Kilgarriff, Frank Farrell, Bill Kelly, Cian Hayden (0-1), Eric Kearney, Shane McEnery, Evan Dalton (0-4), Darragh McCormack, Cathal Mannion (0-1), Liam Leahy, Kenneth Dolan (0-4).

Subs: Brian Leahy for Shane, Eoin Duignan for Darragh.
