Garrycastle’s junior side got their league campaign off to a winning start last Friday night with a narrow but deserved win over the visitors, St Josephs. The first half was played in driving rain and this made underfoot conditions and handling difficult for both teams. An illustration of this was an injury picked up in the 2nd minute by Johnny McGuire when he fell awkwardly in the middle of the pitch as he fielded a ball and had to be replaced.

Garrycastle made the better start and had a point in the second minute from Brian Carty. Noel Galvin doubled their lead with a point in the 10th minute. However, St Josephs hit back with two points in quick succession to level matters in the 13th minute. The visitors had a goal chance soon after but Garrycastle net minder, Michael Fagan, brought off a great save and the danger was cleared. St Joseph did take the lead in the 19th minute but Peadar Mulvihill responded with a point for Garrycastle almost immediately. A point from substitute, Paul Gunning, put Garrycastle into the lead again in the 27th minute. The visitors put good use to the additional time played for the injury to Johnny McGuire by scoring an equaliser in the 4th minute of added time to leave the sides level at the break on 0-4 a piece.

St Joseph took the lead in the 3rd minute of the second half with a point but Garrycastle hit back strongly and in their best period of attacking hit over 3 points in a 3 minute spell to take a two point advantage. The Garrycastle points came from Conor Molloy, Paul Mulvihill and Brian Carty. St Josephs had a point in the 37th minute to reduce the gap to 1 again. Michael Fagan brought off yet another wonderful save to deny St Josephs a goal and a point from substitute, Jack Donoghue increased the gap to 2 in the 41st minute and Alex Gardiner pushed it out to 3 with a well taken score as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Further points from Peadar Mulvihill and Noel Galvin established a 5 point lead with just 3 minutes remaining. Both sides had a player red carded for a second yellow card offence and St Josephs finished the game strongly with a point in the first minute of injury time and a point from a free (the only score that was not from play in the entire game) just before the final whistle.

This was a mixed bag from Garrycastle, with a much improved display in the second half. Michael Fagan brought off some fine saves in goal and deserved to keep his goal intact. There were good defensive displays by Sean Brennan, and Ciaran O’Neill in particular. Noel Galvin was solid throughout and was well supported by Robbie Shine when he mover to midfield on Johnny McGuire’s departure due to injury. There were good performances in attack by Brain Carty, Alex Gardiner and Peadar Mulvihill.
