Annual General Meeting

posted 2 Nov 2015, 02:16 by Matthew Ryan

At the club’s annual general meeting last Friday night, members reflected on another busy 12 months’ activities.  While no major trophies came to the club in 2015, there were some significant developments during the year. The opening of the new training area behind the clubhouse drew much favourable comment, and it was noted that the main pitch has benefited greatly as a result. A second set of concrete steps to the main pitch was another noteworthy addition, while it is hoped to complete the walking track very shortly. Plans are also in place to erect new dug-outs alongside the main pitch.

On the playing fields, the seniors failed to reach the knock-out stages of the championship for the first time since 1999. Our second team reached the quarter final of the Junior championship but had a very disappointing league season, finishing with just two points and being relegated to Division 3. Our third had no luck in the Junior B competition and also had a poor Division 6 league campaign, losing three games and drawing one. We also received walkovers from three of our opponents, and while it was disappointing that our players missed out on these matches, the six points secured as a result will probably save this team from relegation to Division 7.

It was another year without championship success at underage level, with some teams struggling with limited playing numbers. We also experienced a severe shortage of adults to help out, and this problem needs to be addressed for next year. Matters were not helped by the haphazard manner in which official fixtures were managed by Westmeath Minor Board. In sharp contrast, our younger players got plenty of regular games in local tournaments and blitzes that were superbly organised by neighbouring clubs, as well as our own. Once again, the Jim McHugh Memorial Tournament for Under 12s was an outstanding success thanks mainly to the herculean efforts of Mark Redmond.
